The Demon's Chalice

Otherworldly Patron
Comments from the Finger: This cool warlock comes from Damios Azaros, who first recommended it to us on our subreddit!

The Demon's Chalice

Legend tells of an artifact of the icy north, a golden chalice, covered in demonic runes and symbols. Few even know of the chalice, and fewer still have seen it in person, but those who have carried it know that it whispers to its bearer, offering immense power to anyone foolhardy enough to drink from it. With the proper words and incantations, the chalice fills with ice cold blood, summoned from the deepest Abyss.
Essentially, the blood is poison. It infects the veins of whoever drinks it, and confronts them with horrible demonic voices and visions of violence and death. Only the strong can survive the blood and inherit its frigid power.

Demon’s Chalice Expanded Spell List
Spell Level Spells
1st fog cloud, ice knife
2nd levitate, Snilloc’s snowball swarm
3rd sleet storm, wall of water
4th elemental bane, ice storm
5th cone of cold, passwall

Demon’s Mark
Upon forging the bond with your patron at 1st level, a magical tattoo appears on your body, which you can use as an arcane focus for your warlock spells. You can change the damage of any warlock cantrip you cast to cold damage. The mark also allows you to walk on ice and snow as if it was normal terrain.

Glacial Prison
At 6th level, you can use your power to freeze enemies. Whenever you deal cold damage with a spell of 1st level or higher, you can force all enemies affected by the spell to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, a creature is stunned until the end of its next turn. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Ice Glide
At 10th level, your mastery over ice increases. You gain the ability to fly at your normal movement speed. You must begin and end your movement on solid ground, otherwise you fall.

Time Freeze
By 14th level, you can momentarily freeze time itself, allowing you to take an action as a bonus action instead. Other creatures can't use their reactions while you take this action. After using this ability, you must take a short or long rest before using it again.

  1. Isn't this class basically Esdeath from Akame ga kill?

    1. That was the intent. One of my players wanted to play a version of her so I tried multiple things until I came up with this.

Considered using warmage as the base but the need for higher level ice spells made that not work.

  2. MY biggest problem is the 14th level ability is like Action Surge, but worse(Except in a situation where the denying of a reaction is imporant. Still might be worse though.).

    1. I've considered making this no reactions until end of turn, which would up the power of the ability considerably

    2. So the question is: how should we improve this ability? Make it exactly the same? Allow you to burn a spell slot to make it work, and remove the 1/short limitation?

  3. The Ice Glide makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Mastery of ice makes you fly? Since when?
Instead, It could be one of those "you don't care about temperature or traveling" features, or help you somehow in icy terrain, like:
"When you move, you leave the ground behind you frozen (difficult) for 1 round".

The glacial prison is very powerful, but since it's 1/rest I guess it's not overpowered. Time freeze is essentially a bonus action Action Surge, which is fair. However, this seems to me like a debuffing/slowing warlock (and btw, slow probably fits better as a spell than wall of water), so maybe turning someone else into ice (petrifying but with vulnerability to fire) for 1 minute could be more appropriate.

    1. i for one see the ice glide as you flash-freezing the air and creating a temporary ice slide/bridge/whatever that you can "glide across" that essentially allows 3d movement, which melts by the end of your turn, hence needing to start and end on solid ground. i'm guessing the fly speed is just rules wording. the whole feature could worded better though, i guess

that said, it's still a much more useful ability than make your tracks difficult terrain, which is usually only useful when kiting

    2. I imagine a sheet of ice appearing under your feet as you glide into the air, and then quickly melting away.

    3. This patron is based off of a character from the anime Akame Ga Kill named Esdeath.

The Ice Glide ability is based off of an ability possessed the Manga version of the character. That said, the player I designed this for had only watched the anime version and didn't like the ability. I've thought about changing it to a shield(spell) like ability,(maybe uses based on charisma) as the character does block attacks with ice shields

    4. Maybe leaving ice behind you that is like the grease spell? (dex save or pall prone)

    5. I actually really like that 'leaving a trail of ice' thing. Very cool idea. I'll have to think about how to make it balanced. Maybe it just makes the ground around you difficult terrain when you end your turn?

    6. I think making areas into difficult terrain is rather weak. Making it slippery would have more effect in combat.

  4. I'm a little confused on what the intent of Time Freeze is. What does it mean by other creatures can't use their reactions while you take this action? Like if you attack them and they have an ability like Parry, they can't use it?

How does my bonus action being used to use an action interact with the rules on casting spells as a bonus action? Is the spell considered to be cast as an action or bonus action?

I'm a little surprised this subclass doesn't squeeze in cold weather adaptation somewhere. Not a glaring absence, but seems like it would be a nice bit of thematic trim.

    1. The idea was to allow the character to move and attack without triggering opportunity attacks. Probably needs to be reworded to block reactions until end of turn for that to be effective

    2. If the spell is cast as a bonus action, it's considered to be cast as a bonus action. For spellcasting, this is very similar to quicken, but I can see how the wording differing is confusing. I'll try to remedy this with another pass.
