Homebrew Filtering!

Quick update!

We've got a sweet new logo! It's not precisely where I want it to be, but I still have work to do on that yet.

I've been slavishly coding HTML and CSS on the back end of the site with the goal of making it very easy to find what you're looking for. To that end, I've implemented a new (experimental) feature: a homebrew filtering page! Now, when you click the Homebrew link, you'll be taken to a page that allows you to filter posts by class, race, or other parameters. You can still get to the very large HTML table by clicking 'Everything'.

This feature is still experimental, and won't work on mobile devices. Also, some posts might show up in the wrong spot, or not at all, which is something we'll be improving very soon as we refine labels.

Let me know if anything weird happens, or any of you have questions!

  1. It appears to function on my mobile device.

The is should make navigating very easy. I like how you can see the class abilities when filtering just as on the home page.

    1. I mean, it "works" on mobile, but on the desktop version, filtering only shows the subclass titles, which makes it very easy to size update everything at a glance.

  2. It's looking pretty good so far! Thanks guys!

    1. You're welcome! I've been working my ass off on this particular feature. I still have to do a few things to complete the filtering system, like create posts to placeholder patreon-exclusive content, and do several passes to make sure that nothing is tagged incorrectly or not tagged at all, but I'm pretty happy with the results right now.

  3. It functions perfectly fine but I personally do not like it and prefer the old format. I could already sort it by class/race/baseclass/etc, with this new format it is just alot more loading into differnt pages instead of haveing it all there in one place, and I do see the "everything" section which is where the previous format is. All the symbols and pictures look very well made though

    1. I'm aware the old format had a sort function, but I think it'll be faster to find things now that we can filter, and only show things of a particular class. There's a couple of hidden advantages here, too: the filter persists, even if you refresh the page, or return to it, and the filtered pages will update automatically, whereas the sortable table has to be done manually (when I find the time.)

I will concede that we're loading more data for the filtering pages, but ultimately that's only going to be an issue on mobile, where the filtering doesn't do anything special anyway.

  4. This looks very nice, and I love you guys for doing this, but I have one question:
Package filter? Like, say if I want to find the different Class Pack pdfs, or other similar group pdfs. What do I click on?

Sorry for double-post, but there is no editing option, sadly.

    2. No problem. I'm still working on getting the implementation just right, so I appreciate the feedback (and I even have one open spot.) What if I just put all of those in the 'Featured Posts' section on the sidebar? Most of them are there already.

    3. That would be just lovely, and yeah I noticed some of them where there but not every one. If you added the rest in there, then that would be good enough.

      Keep up the good work.

    4. Just came back here to inform you that you forgot the Wild West pack in the 'featured posts' section. Other than that one, I think every single class pack you guys have made that is not a patreon pack are now featured on the homebrew filter page.

    5. That's a *little* by intent. The Wild West pack is due for a complete overhaul -- there's basically no part of it we don't want to change in some major way. Some of these changes are going to be thematic, and others are going to be mechanical, but I'd rather not bring undue attention to something that desperately needs tweaking.

    6. Ahh, okay then. If that is the case then, yeah. I think you guys got everything but the patreon previews(which I am assuming are left out on purpose) one the homebrew filter page. Nice work.

So on a different note: What do you think you guys are going to use the last spot for? Buried Treasure posts?

    7. Or Variant Rules? Or something like that?

    8. I don't know yet. I might make it an 'other' page, or I might make it 'Books' or something like that. I might even make it expandable, with some javascript wizardry. I'm leaving it open until I polish everything else down.

  5. Would an "Other" category with everything that isn't easily categorized be possible? Like magic items, Invocations, Metamagic options, Dark Souls rules, etc. There's a couple empty spaces near the top that would be perfect for it. Maybe have the icon be a question mark or something. Opening up "Everything" and having to manually ignore all the classes, subclasses, and races isn't ideal.

    1. It'll end up being one of those things. Before I get to that, there's some more restructuring and graphic design stuff I need to take care of, so I'm not working on it right away
